Other reports

Heritage Council Review of Forest Policy
In November 2008 the Heritage Council published a report reviewing  Heritage Council forest policy. Whilst not agreeing with the contents entirely, INFF welcomes the findings and recommendations within this excellent report and hopes that it will contribute to promoting sustainable forestry policy in Ireland.

Bioforest Report
This report published in May 2006 investigated the factors affecting the biodiversity present in Irish woodlands. INFF would encourage everyone to read the recommendations for Sustainable Forest Management starting at page 157

The Henry Philips report
In late 2005 a report by Henry Phillips, based on figures provided by Coillte for Coillte's use in the Irish Forestry Certification Initiative effectively dismissed the commercial possibilities for broadleaves in Ireland. INFF disagreed and in a comprehensive counter report Caroline Lewis from Friends of the Irish Environment produced a stunning reply pointing out the innacuracies of the Phillips report.

Briefing Document & Submission on the protection of the fresh water pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera.
This document is based on Access to Information Environment requests to the principal parties involved in addressing the issues that arose from ‘the unexpected catastrophic loss of the fresh pearl mussels (Margaritifera) in River Owenriff in the summer months of 2004.’ The clearfell and release of phosphates associated with this pollution incident have highlighted the new scientific awarness of the environmental damage that comes from clearfelling on fragile soils like Ireland's peaty uplands.

Objection to the use of Cyperpermethrin
INFF objects to the use  of cyperpermethrin in forestry to control the pine weevil, a problem caused by the model of monculture plantations of spruce used in Ireland. Like permethrin cypermethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid. Pyrethroids are synthetic forms of pyrethrins: The World Health Organization explains that all synthetic pyrethroids are neuropoisons acting on the axons in the peripheral and central nervous systems by interacting with sodium channels in mammals and/or insects. The impact on the nervous system is toxic. To read more follow this link
